Notes From the Artist: No sixth photo is included: doll is barefoot, and the jewelry and weapon are from my stash. This is one of the few dolls I own that still has her original eyeballs. (must do something about that!) She's me , and as you can see from the "before" picture, I have blotchy skin and chapped lips, so any faults the judges may note in the repaint job should get credit for realism. The reroot is some wool that might be mohair that I had around from when I thought I'd llike to learn to spin, mixed with some of my own hair. It's crudely spun (fingers only, not even a drop-spindle!), just enough twist for it to hold together.

The Rationale
One of my favorite Bulgarian folksongs starts out like this: Marko loves a Moravka girl. He wants her, his mother doesn't. Not a Moravka girl, she says. They are sickly people. The rest of the song goes on to tell of the girl challenging the mother in several tasks. The girl wins every one, so the mother has to let Marko marry her.
